NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL BRIDAL SHOW IN
LONDON - Ann Saavedra
On a recent
trip to the UK. I attended the National Bridal show in London, spending the
better part of a (tiring) day visiting the some 200 exhibits. Many products were
similar to what we see in the San Francisco Bay Area and some were distinctly
different.
There were
some very elaborate and creative cake designers and also small companies doing
favors, one particularity nice selection from a small Italian company currently
being shown at Harrod’s. What I found to be interesting in the runway show,
which was very professionally produced, were creative headpieces instead of
traditional veils. Some were in the Jackie Kennedy pillbox style, others in a
tiny top hat or fitted cloche.
The
most unusual were embellished with short fluffy veils, beads, flowers, and
feathers floating from the hat as the bride walked down the aisle. Other
headpieces were designed around a large silk flower, also embellished and
sitting in various angles on her head. One of my favorite designers was Jeanne Pacella (www.bellapacella.co.uk),
who uses vintage lace and jewelry pieces to create one of kind hats, purses and
other accessories. Check her website - she is pleased to work on designing
individual pieces and mail to US.
The other
noticeable difference was the attire of the men’s wedding wear. Of course,
being the UK, various kilts were shown as Highland dress and well as a multitude
of colors and cuts in traditional morning and evening wear. Brilliant shirt,
tie and ascot combinations were shown. For youngsters participating in the day,
lots of cute items of clothing and embellishment were shown for them as well.
It was fun to
see how similar, and dissimilar, we do weddings.
